Robust eco-systems

JM works actively with eco-system services in yards and the immediate surroundings to help achieve a good urban and living environment in our projects. At present, former industrial land is frequently “recycled” to be used for homes and workplaces. Before the land can be used, however, potential soil contamination must be remedied.

Ecology and biological values

There is a green and blue structure (vegetation and water) that contributes to the identity of the area, creates attractive public spaces, enables an active and healthy lifestyle and benefits biological diversity. With a structure that enables eco-system services, future climate changes – including a warmer climate and larger amounts of rainfall – can be alleviated by offering shade, a good microclimate and infiltration and purification of storm water. Rich and varied vegetation reduces noise, improves air quality, creates living environments for mammals, birds and insects, contributes to important pollination and sustains the land's fertility for e.g. cultivation.

JM works actively with eco-system services in yards and the immediate surroundings to help achieve a good urban and living environment in our projects. Existing biological values are taken into account and utilized by JM during the development phase of our development projects. By retaining as much as possible of the existing biological values while at the same time creating green structures in yards and street spaces, the most positive conditions possible are created for both maintaining and strengthening the biological diversity in residential areas. The land for building sites always has a green area factor of >0.2 and garden bed share is >0.3, excluding buildings and driving areas. The landscaping surrounding JM's buildings uses non-toxic plants and trees that are suitable for people with allergies, such as apple trees and roses.

Freeing up attractive locations

At present, former industrial land is frequently "recycled" to be used for homes and workplaces. Central and attractive locations can thus be used at the same time that green areas are preserved. Before the land can be used, however, potential soil contamination must be remedied. Contamination clean-up in an area that was previously used for industrial operations must be performed in a manner that ensures the land will not pose a risk in the future to humans or the environment.

Great deal of expertise required to deal with contaminated land

JM has been improving former industrial areas for many years, which gives us unique expertise and experience in terms of managing contaminated land and buildings in an environmentally sound manner. JM also shares know-how and experiences with other countries on an ongoing basis. Clean-up is most often performed by JM's own engineering personnel.

Storm water, water levels and rain

The built and natural environment must be able to withstand heavy rainfall and a changed climate, as well as be able to adjust to changed societal needs in the future. By planning for storm water management with, for example, delay and infiltration of the water, JM ensures that the area can handle heavy rainfall, high water levels and increased amounts of storm water.
