Attractive city

A city’s design greatly influences how attractive it is perceived to be. Many factors must be considered and balanced in order to achieve a socially sustainable character.

Cohesive city

We build cities that are dense and cohesive, and where social functions and service are nearby. Bicycle sharing, public transit, car sharing, cafés, restaurants, stores, library, daycare, schools and cultural and sports events are all important aspects of a sustainable city. Density also creates a more vibrant city with more people moving about, increased security and a more inclusive urban space.

Character

The character of an urban space is extremely important in terms of sustainability and perception. Aesthetics, scales, street lines, views, openness and details all affect our perception of security, well-being and pride. At the same time, the nature of the buildings, including, for example, geometry, orientation, selection of materials, heights and shadow effects greatly impacts their energy requirements, access to natural light, thermal climate, the lifetime of the construction elements and maintenance requirements. Identity and perception

The history and identity of an area greatly influence how the living environment is perceived. Taking advantage of, preserving and providing information about an area's historical buildings, landmarks and cultural and natural environments help us reinforce the area's identity and give the people who live there a sense of belonging and pride.

Nature, green areas and culture

Green areas and water environments are important in terms of creating attractive public spaces and private yards where people can meet for interaction and recreation. A diversity of green spaces including city parks, neighborhood parks, natural lands, verdant passages and greenery in street spaces and in squares provides a setting for everyone in all seasons. Clearly defined, verdant passages make surrounding nature areas and parks accessible.

Mixture of housing, workplaces and social and commercial services

Some important aspects of sustainable urban living are created when there is a variety of functions, buildings, types of housing, home sizes, forms of tenure, public settings, activities, recreation, social and commercial service and ties to the surroundings. Residents should live close to work, preschool, school, grocery stores, playgrounds, restaurants, outdoor activities, sports facilities and, of course, each other.
