Ownership has its advantages

Single family homes with freehold ownership in Sweden mean that you buy your house and your lot and become the registered owner of the property.

For many people, owning a home means greater freedom, though there are restrictions to the rights that accompany home ownership.

Tax exemption

Newly built homes are currently exempt from real estate tax for five years, after which only half the real estate tax is paid for an additional five years. The real estate tax rules are currently being reworked and in the new proposal the Swedish Government wants to repeal the real estate tax and replace it with a local government real estate levy.

If the Riksdag approves the proposal, equivalent rules will apply for the local government levy, which will be effective as of January 1, 2008. For example, a new single-family home would be exempt from the levy for the first five years, and the fee for the next five years would be SEK 3,000, or a maximum of 0.375 percent of the total assessed value of the property.
